The Schererville Community Watch Program has proven to be an effective deterrent of crime in our community. The police can't be everywhere at once; they need the people's reports to tell them where the action is. The Community Watch Program encourages citizens and local businesses to be observant and to report all suspicious activities. Sometimes these reports get directed back through the program organization to the people, alerting them to things such as the description of a car trying to pick up children. The police and the community work best when they work together.
Please continue to report all suspicious-looking vehicles and individuals to the Schererville Police Department at 322-5000. If it turns out to be nothing, that's OK; the police would rather have dozens of such reports than to miss the report that leads to the apprehension of a criminal. Feel free to call whenever you see anything suspicious, and most importantly, call promptly -- don't wait!

Gambling . . . The Other Addiction
At our January 12, 1998 meeting,
"Mark", representing Gamblers
Anonymous, told us from personal
experience how devastating compulsive gambling can be to the
individual, with effects felt throughout the community. Each
compulsive gambler has his or her own "bottom", which
is the lowest they can go before realizing that they need help.
When you've reached your bottom, the number to call is 1-800-GAMBLER
(1-800-426-2537). or 312-346-1588. Gam-Anon, an affiliated
support group for those whose lives are affected by another's
compulsive gambling, can be reached at 708-802-0105.
